Rippin kitten – BMW Motorrad iconic R 18 cruiser has always been a canvas for creativity, offering enthusiasts the chance to push the boundaries of custom design. Since its launch in April 2020, the R 18 has captured the imagination of custom builders from around the globe, with stunning creations emerging from France, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Taiwan, and Germany. Each custom bike adds a unique perspective to this Bavarian masterpiece, blending engineering excellence with artistic flair.
Now, BMW Motorrad Canada is joining the ranks, showcasing their own custom interpretations of the R 18. By collaborating with talented Canadian builders Jay Donovan, Konquer Motorcycles, and Augment Motorworks, BMW is demonstrating just how versatile this bike can be. Let’s take a closer look at these three distinct custom creations that highlight the diverse possibilities of the R 18 platform.
When Jay Donovan of Future Cafe took on the R 18, he brought a fresh, contemporary approach to the classic cafe racer style. The 1,802cc twin-cylinder engine remains the heart of this custom bike, but Donovan has reimagined its bodywork, adding sleek cafe racer elements that give it an aggressive yet refined look.
The clip-on handlebars offer a more crouched riding position, delivering that authentic cafe racer experience. To streamline the design, Donovan cut down both the front and rear fenders, creating a more minimalist silhouette. Perhaps the most striking feature is the exhaust system, which has been re-routed to run upward, ending at the rear of the bike. This change not only improves the bike’s aesthetics but also adds a sense of dynamism to its profile. With this custom build, Donovan demonstrates that the R 18 can easily bridge the gap between traditional cruiser aesthetics and the more aggressive look of modern cafe racers.

Konquer Motorcycles, led by Rob Thiessen, took a completely different approach with their R 18 Diamond Custom. Staying true to the roots of the cruiser genre, Thiessen’s design draws inspiration from the world of drag racing, resulting in a low, elongated silhouette that exudes power and speed. The bronze metallic paint enhances the bike’s dragster-inspired look, while the sleek fenders maintain the R 18’s streamlined aesthetic.
One of the standout features of this custom is the chin spoiler, which gives the bike an even more aggressive stance, akin to the aerodynamic features seen in high-performance drag bikes. Konquer’s design plays with the cruiser archetype but takes it in a bold direction, showing that the R 18 platform isn’t just about nostalgia it can be reimagined with a nod to both the past and future of motorcycle culture.
If you’re looking for a completely unconventional take on the R 18, Nick Acosta from Augment Motorworks delivers with the R 18 Tattooed Chopper. This custom build is a true tribute to the chopper era, complete with a sissy bar, stacked front lights, and a swingarm-mounted rear fender. But what really sets it apart is the tattoo-inspired graphics that adorn the bike, adding a personalized and artistic flair to the design.
Acosta’s approach to the R 18 reflects a deep appreciation for the chopper style, infusing it with both classic and contemporary elements. The handlebars are another highlight, featuring a distinctive hanger-style setup that adds to the chopper’s unique look. With the Tattooed Chopper, Acosta showcases how the R 18 can be transformed into an entirely new kind of machine, one that’s both a nod to motorcycle history and a bold statement for the future.
The R 18 has proven itself to be a platform capable of endless customization possibilities, and BMW Motorrad Canada’s collaboration with these talented builders brings that potential to life in spectacular fashion. Johann von Balluseck, Director of BMW Motorrad Canada, explains, “We wanted to show the true potential of the R 18 and designed the project with that in mind. We chose builders who would approach the project in different ways, and that’s exactly what we got three very different styles, each showing a unique take on the R 18.”
From the sleek and aggressive Future Cafe R 18 to the bold and low-slung R 18 Diamond Custom, and finally, the artistic Tattooed Chopper, BMW Motorrad Canada has shown that the R 18 isn’t just a motorcycle it’s a canvas for creative expression. Each of these bikes reflects the diversity of motorcycle culture and the limitless possibilities of customization, making the R 18 a truly unique machine in the world of cruisers.
