photos from Laconia Bike Week 2010

The nice thing about living where I do is that when Bike Week in Laconia, NH comes around we can just blast up there at any point during the week because we’re so close. A few years ago we spent a few days there, but the festivities are so compact that it’s easy to peruse a lot of it in one day.

The New England weather is almost always predictable during this week. It either rains cats and dogs (which happened during the first weekend) or it’s oppressively hot and sticky, as it was on the day we went up.

We’ve been going to Laconia for bike week for 20 years, more or less, and I have to say it’s a much different rally today. I remember it being a lot more wild, signs that read “Show us your tits” were every ten feet and people lined the streets on the way to the beach sitting in their lawn chairs with coolers of beer next to them.

These days it’s much more family-friendly. Over the past 10 years if any woman flashed her goodies she might get a ticket from the local authorities. Cops are everywhere. To say it’s been watered down is an understatement. It’s almost so subdued that it can be a bummer.

"Weirs" the beach? har har.

But still, we go mainly for all the motorcycles, great people watching, bad food, good music and to scope out the merchandise!

Here’s a few photos from the day:

Love seeing flags flying on bikes.

Laconia, for me,  is still a fun rally with all the comforts of home sprinkled in. We had a great- but much too-short time there!

Don’t you feel though that it’s time has passed? Just seems like there are fewer and fewer people every year. I think the cops up there were never really able to find a balance of allowing people to have some fun without full out war. This year there were way, way more cops than needed but I think that had to do with the recent Angels/Outlaws fight in Manchester.

Maria: *sigh* It certainly has been lacking some spark as time goes by. I think the police presence is a bit oppressive there, despite any kind of 1%ers getting into trouble.

I think it falls into the territory of bad sex is better than no sex? You keep hoping it’s going to get better but sadly it just doesn’t. Yet we would miss it if it were gone…

This is the first year we didn’t even do a day trip up. It’s just really gotten lame and walking around looking at t-shirts gets old real fast. The riding up there is fabulous though, so now we go up and stay near the Weirs in October when we can have the roads all to ourselves!

It’s a shame that it’s gotten that way. I can remember going to Laconia when it was a great rally. It’s sad the police presence has really ruined it for everyone.

Thanks for sharing the pics. They brought back some good memories.

I’ve never tried Acid cigars as I’m not really a fan of flavoured cigars in general. Still, it’s a nice spread of Drew Estate’s offerings…I’d likely grab a few, anyway! I have to admit, I do like Java by Drew Estates.

  6. I subscribe to the theory that if you bring a few friends you can have a great time anywhere. I still love going to Laconia when I have a few days and want to ride. Hitting Mt. Washington and riding around the lakes is a blast. At night just hanging at the Spoke or the Camel toe tent with friends is fun. That being said this is a tame version of what it once was.

Laconia Bike Week looked like an insane amount of Fun. I wish I could have been there, if for nothing other than taking a look at everyone’s bikes.
