Let’s go crazy, let’s get nuts

What was Prince’s “Purple Rain” motorcycle?

Last night while nursing a scratchy throat with some tea, I was flipping through the channels and stumbled across the movie Purple Rain. I immediately began to feel really old when I realized that it was released 26 years ago. Sigh. I remember when I was a kid it looked like the Best Movie Ever, but as I started to watch it last night I realized that it was a really horrible movie with really great music clips.

Then there was his motorcycle. My recollection of it was much different than what it actually was. Maybe it’s the giant fairing in the front, but I recall it being more flashy and impressive. A little bit of Googling ensued (and a lot of conflicting opinions later) led to a forum thread that included info from a guy named Tom Summers, who supposedly worked on the bike for the movie.

He revealed that the motorcycle was a 1981 Honda 400A (also called a Hondamatic 400) and had a Kutter fairing added on (although a lot of people say it’s a Windjammer fairing). The seat had a hot pink velour inserts and you can see the early version of Prince’s symbol painted on the fairing.

There were three bikes in the movie, two of them stunt bikes. Prince’s actual bike was revamped in 1990, painted black and gold for the movie Grafitti Bridge. But one of the stunt bikes, still painted purple, is currently on display at Paisley Park Studios.

OK, there’s my useless knowledge post of the week! I will now have this song stuck in my head for at least…three days!

That doesn’t seem cool enough to be the “Purple Rain” bike, but like you, I probably remember the movie as cooler than it really is. I had a Honda CM400T back then and I lost count of the number of times that people asked me if it was the automatic. I was actually slightly offended that anyone would think I couldn’t or wouldn’t work a clutch.

Funny that you should post this! My boyfriend’s daughter was watching Purple Rain the other night and I had to Google Prince’s bike because I didn’t recognize it. In my teenaged memory, it was a gigantic chopper LOL LOL Oh, how little I knew about bikes then :)

  3. Wow…this post brought back memories. I loved Prince when I was a teenager. I even constructed a shrine to him and would light candles when I listened to his music. Yes…FREAK! lol Anyway, I remember wanting to ride on the back of his motorcycle. I recently watched the movie again and thank goodness most of it was about the music. I did so love that music!

I just had to forward this link to my brother. He has been restoring his 1978 Honda automatic since last December. It has been in the family since 1979. It has the same make fairing. He said the fairing on Prince’s bike is circa 1978 made by Vetter. It was my brothers restoration project that has let me back to riding after a 16 year absence from it. I have had my 2008 purple Sportster XL1200C for just over a month and ride as often as I can. I love seeing real stories about real women who ride. Thanks for this website.

I listen to Let’s Go Crazy almost daily at the gym and I was actually thinking about watching Purple Rain once again. It’s been soooo long since I’ve seen it. I often wondered about his MC, thanks for the post :)
