Don't underestimate these chaps. I am a retired police officer and purchased a black two-piece rain suit 15 years ago. I had the wife convert the rain pants to chaps using a commercially-made set of rain chaps as a pattern. I needed the chaps to allow access to all the gear on my utility belt (gun, radio, pepper spray, baton, cuffs, etc.). IF you wear a matching lightweight rain jacket, they will keep your pelvic region dry enough if the jacket is thigh-length. The other consideration is layering. The drier you stay, the warmer you will be. The chaps can act as a windbreaker.

*UPDATE*
Helmet Hair blog wrote a review about these as well and his review is very frank: http://www.helmethairblog.com/reviews/rain-chaps-review

He definitely took a different approach in his review than I did.

Ha ha no worries!! That seems to be a lot of people's initial reaction, until I clarify that they're definitely not there to replace rain gear. I have to say that they are great for the conditions I described, without the bulkiness of the full suit.

From that point of view, I'd have to agree with you. I just re-read your review and you did clarify that - I don't know how I missed it. For $20 and very compact, I just may pick some up. They do seem a great alternative to putting on heavy, full rain pants when the water is only coming off the street and not down from the sky.

I'll be sure to slow down and read a bit more carefully next time!

Joker, you are right. These won't keep your ass dry and you're not the first to point that out, it's a common reaction. However, these are not for full-on, heavy rain riding weather and are not intended to replace your full rainsuit.

These are better for keeping your pants dry during wet road conditions that kick up spray, riding thru puddles after a rain, foggy weather that can leave your clothes damp or really light misty rain. I know for me, I hate wearing my heavy rain suit in lighter precipitation (especially on a warmer day) cuz boy do you sweat in those things!

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough in the review. These are definitely *not* going to replace your full, heavy-duty rain gear.

’ve done a lot of riding in the rain and these don’t look like they’d be very good at all because they don’t cover your ass. The first thing that’s going to happen is the rain is going to soak through your butt and then wick down your legs. On my way to Sturgis I did about 130 miles in fairly heavy rain at one stage and I would have gotten soaked with these things on. Hate to be negative, but I’m all for my H-D rainsuit. It may be more expensive, but you get what you pay for – including heat-shields on the insides of the pant legs, and full derrier coverage. Just my .02

Torch, there is not a stirrup at the bottom. There is a slit up the sides with long strip of velcro to keep the bottom closed tight over your boot (photos on bikerrainchaps.com).

Thanks for the review. I do have one question though. Is there a strap across the bottom that goes under your boot to keep them pulled down?

Ride on,

Ray-thanks for the clarification on those points. All of those things are good to know, especially the durability of them. I really think they're great and good to have in the arsenal.

Hi Liz... Thanks for the awesome review!!!

I just wanted to make a few quick comments.

Just to clarify, Biker Rain Chaps are made of polyester... Not to confused with leisure suit pants, our polyester is sturdy and 100% waterproof.

As a matter of fact, the material is so sturdy that one of our customers who works for the Washington State Parks & Recreation Services uses our rain chaps when he mule packs supplies in and out of the forests to other park services workers... And, boy, those mules look really funny wearing them...

No joke. He loves them and says they've survived many battles between his legs and the trees... Situations much worse than most bikers will encounter.

Finally, to address the heat sensitivity... The rain chaps are NOT heat proof. They are, however, heat resistant. They will not be affected by normal pipe exposure on your bike.

HOWEVER, if you happen to lay your leg against the pipe wearing our rain chaps, eventually, they will melt. But, you'll probably be much more concerned about the severe burn to your leg than you will be about melting a $20 pair of rain chaps... Just sayin'... ;)

Thanks again for the review.

Glad you like them and love your blog.

- Ray.
