Big changes for this Kitten

Life has a way of kicking you in the balls, or in my case, punching you in the ovaries.  A lot of you know that in addition to writing about my passion for motorcycling, I work full time as an Interactive Designer.  I design websites, online advertising, email campaigns and that sort of stuff.

I’ve worked for some big agencies on big accounts.  Last year I moved to a smaller agency with clients that were more fun and allowed me to be more creative with my design work. The downside to that is that I’d been working stupid hours with unreasonable deadlines and overall not too happy about it. Other than the ridiculous workloads of late, there were other things at play. Office politics were beginning to play a big part, tension with the offline creative group, pressure from upper management and then my boss was maneuvered into resigning by her new boss, etc. etc.

So it didn’t come as too much of a shock when I walked into a meeting the other day with my writing partner and we were informed that our positions were “eliminated”. I was laid off.

The sucky thing is that I was let go for purely political reasons, not economic ones, not because of poor job performance (in fact I got a more than glowing review just the week before and some of the coolest work of my career is slated to go live very soon).  It’s been a long time since I haven’t had a full time job. I’ve been working steadily since I was 16 years old and today starts the first week that I won’t have to go somewhere to work. I can roll out of bed, have coffee with the cat and get my online portfolio together.

Luckily, if you can call it lucky, I had expected it. I had a lot of hypothetical conversations with my husband the week before, made many jokes about the possibility of not having a job the following week.

And so, here I am with a clean slate, at the crossroads, [insert cliché metaphor here]. I think I’d like to get some freelancing going and make a go of it through the summer. And I can also put a lot of focus on riding and blogging. Rippin-Kitten.com is going to be celebrating the two year blogoversary mark next month!

Now I have the opportunity to give more time and attention to this site. It’s time to retire this blog theme and incorporate a more robust layout. My readership has steadily increased over the past year and Rippin-Kitten is now one of the top three motorcycle blogs out there. I’ve been getting more and more followers on Twitter (thx fellow Tweeps!) and I really want to expand it to incorporate all the things people are looking for to take it to the next level. Don’t be surprised if you see some poll action (not pole action, sorry guys!) in the next few weeks so that I can get a better idea of who’s reading. I’m really excited!

Well, that is what’s happening in my world. How are you guys?

Got me excited for a minute there with the pole action. Made me think that your career path was going to take a drastic turn. LOL!

Sorry to hear about the job situation. There’s been a lot of that going around the past few months. Hopefully it will turn out for the best.
As long as the blog stays motorcycle based, I will continue to follow it.

Well, sorry to hear about you being laid off, but at least you have a positive outlook and know what your next plan is. I look forward to seeing what you’ve got up your sleeve!

Can we have a poll to vote on pole action? ;)

Always sucks to lose your job, but at least you were mentally prepared for it. I’m with D-Day, as long as it stays motorcycle centric, you’ll keep this reader.

Well, not having a “real” job can suck, and it can be a blessing… your blog rocks and you had better keep it up or the whole family will pile into the sidecar rig and come kick your ass. Well, we will drive up, park in front of your place, and make some seriously threatening gestures at least…
Look on the bright side… now you and your ol’ man can meet us in the midwest and we can ride any direction we choose.

There is something better for you out there. Looking forward to seeing the next evolution of Rippin Kitten.

    Ride on,
    Torch

Thanks for all the support you guys. While it doesn’t feel great to be let go from my job I guess I’ve just come to terms with it and am looking forward to the next step. We’re trying to think of it as a blessing in disguise. It would be great to be able to survive as a freelance designer (or full time blogger!) and this is sort of the kick in the pants I guess I needed to actually go through and do those things, rather than wonder what it would be like to do those things.

And for the record, this blog WILL remain a motorcycle blog. I promise I won’t start blogging about celebrity gossip or fashion week! My plans are mainly to give it a fresh coat of paint and tack on some shiny goodies!

And yeah, rockin’ the pole is not in the plans for moonlighting either! ;)

  7. My take on life is that everything happens for a reason! There are bigger and better things out there for you…best of luck as you work toward them!

    Thanks Steph! I hope you’re right. :)

I know exactly where you are at. I’m in the same industry. I’m out. I’m not doing it anymore and moving on. This is the second time this has happened to me and I’m done. 2001 and now. The first time around I started my coffee shop as a backup.

It’s time to re-invent yourself. It happens. I did all the apple demos for the retail outlets for years and HP as well. It sucks because I sort feel like a rock star that nobody listens too anymore…lol! (They should do a series on VH1, “Behind the media”. Just go kick ass and this is the time that really will set you apart from the rest. I’m trying to decide where to go next myself. If I come up with something I’ll know where to go.

  10. Aw man, sorry to hear about that… I don’t think there’s anyone out there who isn’t worried about the same thing (a layoff) happening to him/her right now too.

This could be your shot to really turn it on for this site though – so you’re definitely on target there. :)

I hope you kick some a** and take some names!!

Hey Girl… it will be okay. You sound like you know what’s up in your life and it will come to you. You are young and it will bring you plenty… I am 55 this year and change turned my life around at age 50. Change is good and you got it together. It will be exciting and I am looking forward to hearing of life’s renderings for you!
