Sturgis motorcycle week, vicariously

Look, there’s a lovely lady riding down Main St.

As I have mentioned before, I have never had the pleasure of attending the Sturgis bike rally. I’ve talked about it a whole bunch of times but the plans just never came to fruition. Well, I guess if I can’t go to Sturgis, I can bring Sturgis to me with the interactive Sturgis street, sidewalk and Main St. webcams, which appear to be on a 30 seconds refresh rate. It’s almost like being there, except that I can hear, feel or smell what’s happening there.

*sigh*

I remember back in 1997 my girlfriend (now wife) and I went through Sturgis on the way back? or on the way to? Mount Rushmore etc (our first vacation together), and stopped at a pancake house for breakfast. Of course there were bikes everywhere, including this restaurant. But just before we were ready to leave, about 200 motorcycles drove up and surrounded the parking lot and half came in to the pancake restaurand and maybe half went to a burger place next door (and um, the 3rd half were sitting outside on their bikes)

We probably drank the most coffee that day in our entire trip! But, nobody would leave. I finally went out and started to chat with some of the bikers and actually enjoyed talking about some of their rides that week. Anyway, it was time to go and I asked if they could move their bikes while I back out of the lot and about 15 of them were on their bike, slowly walking it backwards clearing the path. I tell you - THAT was the most nervous 20 seconds I think I’ve been .. slowly backing out of a parking lot hoping not to scratch any bikes - who’s owners will still sitting on ‘em! haha .. it was fun and rememberable though. I’d dig up some of the photos from that trip and post them one day - but, I figure if it’s not online by now - they probably were never good enough to post anyway.

I went to Sturgis in 2004 and it was an amazing trip. You have to do it at least once. I had to laugh when I saw the link to the webcam because for the last 3 years, while the rally is going on, I sit here at my computer and watch and wish I was there. Being there was like being at home for me. I felt like I was in the place that I was supposed to be in and didn’t want it to ever end. I cried when I rolled into Sturgis and I bawled like a baby the day I left. I know I will return someday and rejoin all of the bikers that are as crazy about the biker world as I am. Until then there is always that webcam of Main Street to help me relive my many memories.

Stephanie: I know exactly what you mean. I will get there one day, oh yes I will. I think I’m definitely going to go to Daytona in 2008. I believe if I start planning now I can make that happen! Sturgis may happen next year as well!
